Question: In the Figure below the teeth of the gear wheels exert a force of 250 N on each other. The radius of the smaller wheel is 10 cm, and the larger wheel has a radius of 20 cm.

a) Calculate the turning moment produced by each wheel.

Solution:

The teeth of the gear wheels exert a force of 250 N on each other. The radius of the smaller wheel is 10 cm, and the larger wheel has a radius of 20 cm.

The radius of the smaller wheel r1 is 10 cm (0.1 m), and the larger wheel has a radius r2 of 20 cm (0.2 m).

a) The turning moment from the smaller wheel = F × r1 = 250 N x 0.1 m = 25 N
The turning moment from the larger wheel = F × r2 = 250N x 0.2 m = 50 N
